Procrastination

I saw this posted in a weight-loss group/contest, that several of my friends and I are in.  It says “There are seven days in a week and someday is not one of them.”  That says it all.  It seems to get easier and easier in this fast-paced society to put off for tomorrow what we think we don’t have the time, finances, determination, or energy to take on today.  I believe that is one of the biggest tricks of the enemy to get us to put off our praying, Bible reading, visiting someone, soul-winning, and yes, even losing weight and taking control of our flesh.

The Bible says:

Deut.11: 26-27“Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; 28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.

Deuteronomy 30:15-16
“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil,
16 - in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.

Deuteronomy 30:19
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;

Ps. 95:8 Today, if you will hear His voice: “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

Matt. 6 tells us that we don’t even know if we have tomorrow.  What is in your hand today to do?  Is someone standing before you in need of Jesus? What if you were the last possible witness before he or she goes into eternity?

My oldest son’s high school friend, in Alaska, died in a car accident this week.  He was a young man.  It was unexpected.  I wondered if my son or I were the last persons who could have told him about Jesus.

When this life is over, we will never regret the last offering and say “why didn’t I keep more?”  We will say, why didn’t I give more, one last time.  We will never regret the last soul we have to lay down at Jesus’ feet.  We will never regret stepping out of our comfort zone to tell someone about Him or forgiving someone today.   We won’t regret reaching out to someone more, turning the other cheek, but we will regret letting our flesh go and giving someone the last piece of our mind.

If someone has a nicotine habit and convinces himself that he will quit tomorrow, it will never come.  One day as he sits in the doctor’s office and hears that he has lung cancer, it will be too late.  The same for those of us carrying extra pounds that are silently eating away at our liver, our arteries, and our heart.  Tomorrow will never come.  We must say, “today is the day of salvation”.  God is gracing me to do today whatever I need to do.  He is with me.  He can multiply my time and energy.  I will not put off until tomorrow what I can do today.
